Permission to Engage Victims' families and an ex-US soldier unpick the Wikileaks film that showed US forces killing Iraqi civilians in 2007.   Filmmaker: Shuchen Tan On July 12, 2007, the US military shot several Iraqi civilians in Baghdad, an event that shocked the world when footage of the attack was later released by Wikileaks. "The attack took place on a Thursday, when residents of the area had gone to a local market," explains filmmaker Shuchen Tan. "When they saw helicopters hovering over, they ran to their houses, thinking they'd be safe in there but it was those very houses that were blown up."

Permission to Engage traces the people involved in that fateful day and hears their versions of what happened. Those killed included a young Iraqi photojournalist and his assistant, a father out with his children and some neighbours who were caught in the attack while trying to help the wounded. "It was quite challenging to track down the victims and their families. We didn't have names, didn't have addresses, we didn't have anything," explains Tan. "And when we found them, most of them didn't want to share their stories. They felt they had been left by the West and not treated well." The families of the victims and a disillusioned former US soldier who was serving in Iraq around that time unpick the footage in forensic detail and relate their accounts of what happened.

D. W. Griffith: Father of Film

D. W. Griffith (1875-1948) is one of the most influential figures in the history of the motion picture. As director of The Birth of a Nation, he is also one of the most controversial. 

He raised the cinema to a new level of art, entertainment, and innovation; and for the first time he illustrated film's potential to become propaganda, to champion a cause and influence an audience.
Collected together here are virtually all of the interviews given by D. W. Griffith from the first in 1914 to the last in 1948. Some of the interviews concentrate on specific films, including The Birth of a Nation, Intolerance, and, most substantially, Hearts of the World. 

 Other interviews provide the director with an opportunity to expound on topics of personal interest, including the importance of the proper exhibition of his and others' films, and his search for truth and beauty on screen.

 The interviews are taken from many sources, including leading newspapers, trade papers, and fan magazines. They are often marked by humor and by a desire to please the interviewer and thus the reader. 

Griffith may not have been particularly enthusiastic about giving interviews, but he seems determined always to put on a good show.

 Anthony Slide, Studio City, California, is the author of seventy-five books, including The Griffith Actress and The Films of D. W. Griffith, coauthored with Edward Wagenknecht. 

In 1990, he received an honorary doctorate of letters from Bowling Green University, at which time he was hailed by Griffith's most famous actress, Lillian Gish, as "our preeminent historian of the silent film."

സി.എസ്. അജയകുമാര്‍, സംഗീത സംവിധായകന്‍ വിദ്യാധരന്‍, സിനിമാ സംവിധായകന്‍ ബാബു നാരായണന്‍, ചന്ദ്രന്‍ തുടങ്ങിയവരാണ് വെല്ലൂരില്‍ പോയത്. കോഴിക്കോട് മിംസിലായിരുന്നപ്പോഴും ഇവര്‍ അഞ്ചാറുതവണ ജഗതിയെ സന്ദര്‍ശിച്ചിരുന്നു. ജഗതിയുടെ അടുത്ത ബന്ധുകൂടിയാണ് അജയകുമാര്‍. തൃശ്ശൂരിലെ ഏതു ചടങ്ങിനെത്തിയാലും അജയനെ കാണാതെ ജഗതി മടങ്ങാറുമില്ല.

വടക്കുംനാഥനിലെ അഭിഷേകം ചെയ്ത നെയ്യും ജഗതിക്കുവേണ്ടി വഴിപാട് നടത്തി കിട്ടിയ പ്രസാദവും കൂടെ കരുതിയിരുന്നു. ശബരിമലയില്‍ ഇപ്പോള്‍ നടതുറക്കുന്ന ദിവസങ്ങളിലെല്ലാം ജഗതിയുടെ സൗഖ്യത്തിന് പ്രത്യേകം വഴിപാടുകര്‍മ്മങ്ങളുണ്ടെന്ന വിവരവും അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ ബന്ധുക്കള്‍ പറഞ്ഞു. 

നെല്ലുവായ് ധന്വന്തരി ക്ഷേത്രത്തില്‍ മദ്ദളവിദ്വാന്‍ കലാമണ്ഡലം നാരായണന്‍ പ്രത്യേക വഴിപാടുകള്‍ കഴിപ്പിച്ച പ്രസാദവും വെല്ലൂരില്‍ എത്തിച്ചിരുന്നു. ഇവര്‍ കൃഷ്ണഗിരിയിലെ കാട്ടുവീര ആഞ്ജനേയ ക്ഷേത്രത്തില്‍ കയറിയും വഴിപാടുകള്‍ കഴിപ്പിച്ചാണ് വെല്ലൂരിലേയ്ക്ക് പോയത്.

ആസ്പത്രിയിലെത്തിയപ്പോള്‍ ജഗതി ഫിസിയോ തെറാപ്പി മുറിയിലായിരുന്നു. രാവിലെ 11 മുതല്‍ 45 മിനിറ്റ് വരെ വ്യായാമം. ക്ഷീണിതനെങ്കിലും മുഖത്ത് പ്രസരിപ്പുണ്ട്. കണ്ടതും തിരിച്ചറിഞ്ഞ ഭാവത്തില്‍ ചിരിച്ചു തലകുലുക്കി. ഇരിക്കാന്‍ ആംഗ്യം കാട്ടി. ഓരോരുത്തരുടെ കൈകളില്‍ മാറി മാറി പിടിച്ചു. തൊട്ടുമുമ്പില്‍ വെച്ചിട്ടുള്ള കണ്ണാടിയില്‍ നോക്കി കൈകാലുകള്‍ സ്വയം പൊന്തിക്കുന്ന വ്യായാമവും ഇടക്ക് ചെയ്യിക്കുന്നുണ്ട്. പരസഹായമില്ലാതെ ഇടയ്‌ക്കെല്ലാം ജഗതിക്ക് ചെയ്യാനാകുന്നുമുണ്ട്.

ശബ്ദം പുറത്തുവന്നില്ലെങ്കിലും ചിരിക്കുന്നുണ്ട്. കുറേനേരം ചാരി ഇരിക്കാവുന്ന സ്ഥിതിയിലായിരുന്നു. തമാശകേട്ട് ആസ്വദിച്ച് ചിരിക്കുന്നുമുണ്ട്. ചിരിയടക്കാന്‍ കഴിയാതായപ്പോള്‍ ഇടയ്ക്ക് ചുമ വന്നു. രണ്ടരമണിക്കൂറാണ് ജഗതിയ്‌ക്കൊപ്പം ചെലവഴിച്ചത്. ഭക്ഷണമെല്ലാം ഒരു പ്രയാസവുമില്ലാതെ കഴിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു.

 ഇതിനിടയില്‍ ഭാര്യ ശോഭയോട് ജഗതി എന്തോ ആവശ്യപ്പെട്ടു. ഏതാനും ദിവസംമുമ്പ് കേരളത്തിലെ ഒരു സ്‌കൂള്‍ വിദ്യാര്‍ത്ഥിനി ജഗതിയുടെ തിരിച്ചുവരവിന് ആശംസയും പ്രാര്‍ത്ഥനയും നേര്‍ന്ന് അയച്ച കാര്‍ഡായിരുന്നു അത്. ആ ആശംസാ കാര്‍ഡ് പിടിച്ചു കുറേനേരം നോക്കിയതിനിടയില്‍ കണ്ണുനനയാന്‍ തുടങ്ങി. യാത്രചോദിച്ച് സുഹൃത്തുക്കള്‍ മടങ്ങാനൊരുങ്ങുമ്പോള്‍ ഒരിക്കല്‍ കൂടി ജഗതി ആംഗ്യം കാട്ടി. തിരിച്ചുവരുമ്പോള്‍ കാണാമെന്ന ഭാവത്തില്‍.courtesy : mathrubhumi(only article)

വിവാദങ്ങള്‍ എന്നെ വ്രണപ്പെടുത്താറില്ല. വിവാദങ്ങളെ വളരെ നിസാരമായി കാണാനാണ് ഞാന്‍ ആഗ്രഹിക്കുന്നത്. പുരുഷന്‍മാരുമായി എന്നെ ബന്ധപ്പെടുത്തി പറയുന്നതില്‍ എനിയ്ക്ക് വിഷമമില്ല. ഞാന്‍ ഒരു ബംഗാളി സ്ത്രീയാണ്. അതുകൊണ്ട് തന്നെ ദുര്‍ഗയുടെ ഒരംശം എന്നില്‍ ഉണ്ടെന്നാണ് എന്റെ വിശ്വാസം(ചിരിക്കുന്നു). പുരുഷന്‍മാരുമായി ബന്ധപ്പെടുത്തി എന്നെ കുറിച്ച് പലരും പറയുന്നു. എന്നാല്‍ എനിയ്ക്കതില്‍ പരാതിയില്ല.

സിനിമയില്‍ പൂര്‍ണമായും സെക്‌സിയായി അഭിനയിക്കാന്‍ തീരുമാനിച്ചോ ?
ഒരിക്കലുമില്ല. യഥാര്‍ത്ഥ ജീവിതത്തില്‍ ഞാനൊരു നല്ല കുട്ടിയാണ്.  ആളുകളൊക്കെ കരുതുന്നത് ഞാനൊരു ചൂടന്‍ കഥാപാത്രമാണെന്നാണ്. എന്നാല്‍ ചിലര്‍ എന്നെ നേരിട്ട് കണ്ട് സംസാരിച്ചുകഴിയുമ്പോള്‍ അവരുടെ അഭിപ്രായമൊക്കെ മാറും. ഇപ്പോള്‍ ഞാന്‍ ഒരു വീട്ടമ്മയുടെ വേഷം ചെയ്യുകയാണെങ്കിലും ആളുകള്‍ പറയും ഞാന്‍ ഒരു സെക്‌സി വീട്ടമ്മയാണെന്ന്‌.
അടുത്തതായി പുറത്തിറങ്ങാനിരിക്കുന്ന റാസ് 3 യിലെ  കഥാപാത്രത്തെ കുറിച്ച് ?
ഒരുപാട് ആഗ്രഹം മനസ്സില്‍ നിറച്ച് നടക്കുന്ന ഒരു സ്ത്രീ കഥാപാത്രമാണ്. അവള്‍ എന്ത് വിചാരിക്കുന്നുവോ അതെല്ലാം നടക്കണമെന്ന് കരുതി നടക്കുന്ന കഥാപാത്രം. ആ കഥാപാത്രത്തിന് ഞാനുമായി ചെറിയ ബന്ധമുണ്ടെന്ന് തോന്നുന്നു. എന്നാല്‍ തീര്‍ത്തും ആ കഥാപാത്രത്തെ പോലെയല്ല ഞാന്‍.

ചിത്രത്തിന് വേണ്ടി ദുര്‍മന്ത്രവാദം പരിശീലിക്കുന്നെന്ന് കേട്ടല്ലോ, ബോളിവുഡില്‍ മറ്റാരെങ്കിലും ഇത്തരത്തില്‍ പരിശീലനം നടത്തുന്നുണ്ടോ?
സ്വകാര്യമായി ആരെങ്കിലും അങ്ങനെ ചെയ്യുന്നുണ്ടോയെന്ന് എനിയ്ക്ക് അറിയില്ല. സിനിമാ ഇന്‍ഡസ്ട്രിയെന്ന് പറയുന്നത് തന്നെ ദൈവവിശ്വാസത്തില്‍ അധിഷ്ഠിതമാണ്. അപ്പോള്‍ അവിടെ ദുര്‍മന്ത്രവാദത്തിനും സ്‌കോപ്പ് ഉണ്ടാവും.

New Delhi: Bipasha Basu has come a long way since her debut in ‘Ajnabee’ (2001). Through films such as ‘Raaz’, ‘Jism’ and ‘Corporate’, Bipasha has carved a separate place for herself in the Hindi film industry. She will soon be seen in ‘Raaz 3’, which according to Bipasha, is going to be one of her best performances. Bipasha talks about her career and journey so far in the Hindi film industry.
Q: Are film stars really very paranoid in their real lives?
A: Some are, for sure, because the higher you go the pressure of being on top, and the very addictive fame. I am sure there are people like that. I don’t know about the dabbling in the dark but the fact that why we are so religious, so superstitious as we go up higher in the rank, is coming from the stem that you have some kind of insecurity because the business is so fragile, so there is no method to this madness. You don’t know when are you going to be on top and where are you going to fall. It’s a crazy place, there is so much love and then there is so much criticism. The basic sentiment remains the fear of falling.

Q: Does this mean that there is a Shanaya Kejal in every actor?
A: Shanaya basically stands for every actor. I used to think that I am a very different kind of actor because when I came to this business, I didn’t want to be an actor, I figured out things while I was on job. Over the years, my priorities have changed, work was always number 3 or 4, so I never felt the pressure of struggle, I never went and looked for work. I am not a go getter in that sense, but things have changed in last two years. I have realised that work is everything that makes me happy. Everyone in my life is settled, I don’t have to look after anyone. Who do I make happy now, there is only ‘me’ left. Thus, I have realised that this fear of losing things is in my life too. I don’t know to which level I would go to keep things intact, I can only work, all I have is talent. I am not as dark as Shanaya. However, the reality is there is going to be a fading away point and I don’t know how I am going to react to that.
Q: You have been largely perceived as a strong person, so didn’t you find difficulties in playing such a loud character, which cries inconsolably.
A: You’re right that I am a very contended person but that doesn’t move me away from the fact that I am a human being, I am vulnerable, fragile, I have my low points, I am a girl.
Q: Whatever you say, your basic image remains that of an empowered woman.
A: That’s a sweet thing but there is something more to it. Because you speak like this, my family expects this out of me or friends perceive me in a different way or I am a role model to millions of girls, it’s become a habit to stay strong. You know when everybody is expecting so much out of you; sometimes you are just fed up of it. You just want to scream that I am not that strong.
We were doing this really tough scene where it didn’t require me to cry but it was an insane scene. I pushed myself beyond a point that the real ‘me’ wanted to burst out. I was waiting for Vikram to say cut and he was letting me go for it. He said cut and I started crying. I did this for the first time in my life.
A lot of self realisation happened during ‘Raaz 3’, that’s why I have an emotional attachment to this film.
Q: Probably you want to be seen in a different light now.
A: People consider me as an honest person; similarly they would understand that I am an honest actor too. Though this is a horror genre film but I have left no stone unturned to give it a real feel. Every day I used to be very exhausted and drained, even though Bhatt saab used to say, ‘Beta, you did so well,’ Vikram would say, he calls me Vispasha, ‘Vispasha, you are such a cutie,’ but people who know me understand that it’s really difficult for me to get so dark. Vikram knows me well, he has seen me for years, but in spite of their faith and appreciation, nothing mattered to me at the end of the day. I was still not feeling great about the scenes. I needed to finish the film fast and move out of Shanaya.
As an actor, I was also worried, because I don’t think any other contemporary of mine would have picked this role. It was the same like ‘Jism’, people were wary of the dark things. I just feel that every single thing in ‘Raaz 3’ needs to be perfect. Both Emraan and Esha have done great jobs.
I did ‘Corporate’ which was not very dark; there was a kind of realism attached to it. Most of our roles are very frivolous; we are just like pretty faces, doing item numbers, you don’t have to do much. It’s a tougher thing to do for us because you’re a thinking person. I have been in the business for more than ten years and I have not put a thought process to it, I just moved according to what I was thinking at that time. Surprisingly I was liked in ‘Dhoom’, which was absolutely frivolous. (Laughs)

സിബി മലയില്‍ സംവിധാനം ചെയ്ത അപൂര്‍വരാഗത്തിന്റെ തിരക്കഥാകൃത്തുക്കളില്‍ ഒരാളായ നജീം കോയയാണ് ഫ്രൈഡേയുടെ രചന നിര്‍വഹിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നത്. ഫഹദ്, മനു, ആന്‍ എന്നിവര്‍ക്ക് പുറമേ ജഗതി, നെടുമുടി വേണു, വിജയരാഘവന്‍ തുടങ്ങിയ താരനിരയും ചിത്രത്തിലുണ്ടാവും.

ജോമോന്‍ തോമസ് എന്ന ക്യാമറാമാനും റോബി ഏബ്രഹാം എന്ന സംഗീത സംവിധായകനും ഈ ചിത്രത്തിലൂടെ അരങ്ങേറ്റം കുറിക്കുന്നു. റെക്‌സ് വിജയനാണ് പഞ്ചാത്തല സംഗീതം ഒരുക്കുന്നത്.
